Philip Steigerwald focuses his practice on defense litigation, representing insurance carriers and companies in various civil matters. Before joining Kopka Pinkus Dolin, his practice covered a wide variety of matters, including general litigation, acquisitions, commercial contracts, commercial and residential real estate, estate planning, probate, criminal defense, and condominium and homeowners’ association matters.
Philip also clerked at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Madison, drafting and research of briefs in a wide variety of civil and criminal matters, both at trial and appellate levels.
Prior to his law career, Philip was a high school teacher at the Chesterton Academy of Milwaukee, Inc. where he taught philosophy, theology, and history. He also served as the attorney coach for the mock trial team at Badger High School in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

- Drafted a winning brief in Wisconsin Supreme Court case clarifying the 3-step process in coverage analysis of commercial general liability policies, overturning precedent of Wis. Pharmacal Co., LLC v. Neb. Cultures of Cal., Inc.
- Awarded a summary judgment in favor of a homeowner’s association where the former owner sued the association, claiming she still retained the memberships.
- Defeated a motion to enforce arbitration agreement, despite longstanding rule strongly in favor of enforcing such agreements.
- Drafted winning brief in Illinois appellate case. Plaintiff, a purchaser of units in a Chicago condominium, appealed grants of summary judgment and dismissals of various counts relating to defendants, condominium association and realtors, alleged representations and promises relating to the sale of subject units.
